Why You Should Eat in an Igloo

Have you ever wondered what it might be like to grab a few beers and some dinner while being able to look up at the night sky even though it’s the dead of winter? I have! I can’t imagine anything better than looking up at the starry winter sky while snow flakes gently fall all around me- but not on my face or in my beer because I’m protected from the elements by a lovely igloo. When I saw that Goshen Brewing Co. was adding igloos to their seating I knew I should eat in an igloo.

About Goshen Brewing Co.

Goshen Brewing Co., also well known locally as GBCo., is a family friendly brewery that offers delicious farm to table food. After moving back to Goshen, the owners converted an old Northern Indiana Public Service Company building into a really cool space with long tables so you can get to know the people in your community. They also boast a lovely patio that overlooks the river and forest. During the winter there are several fire pits burning on the patio so you can enjoy a beverage while warming yourself by the fire. In the summer, huge garage style doors open up, making the beer hall open to the warm summer breezes. A fun fact about GBCo. is that it is a 100% wind-powered facility. I love how they locally source their foods (they list the local farms and businesses on their website) and care so much about their community and the environment.

Goshen Brewing Company Igloos

The igloos at Goshen Brewing Company seat 5 to 8 people. Some of the igloos have chairs around a low table, lounge style, while others have picnic tables in them. All igloos have a heater and a blue tooth speaker. The igloos are sanitized and then aired out for 30 minutes between guests. Our group was in an igloo with chairs. It was somewhat challenging to eat (I had a cobb salad) but definitely doable. Travis had the Hot Mess Sandwich with chips, and he felt like it was pretty easy to eat a sandwich without a table. You can check out the menu here. I did leave my coat and stocking cap on in the igloo. I’d guess it was around 60 degrees in the igloo with the heater on. I was never cold though.

How to Reserve Your Igloo

The igloos are available Tuesday through Friday from 4pm-9pm, Saturday from 12pm-9pm, and Sunday from 10 am-3pm. You can reserve yours here. It is important to note that Tuesdays are Pad Thai day, and that is the only meal offered with the exception of the kids menu. The Pad Thai gets rave reviews, so if you enjoy that dish you should definitely eat in an igloo on Tuesday! Sunday offers the Sunday brunch menu only. The igloo reservations are for an hour and 45 minutes each. It costs $5 to reserve your igloo, and you must spend a minimum of $75.

The Beer

We can’t talk about a brewery without mentioning the beer. Goshen Brewing offers a great variety of craft beer. My standby is the Millrace Hefe which is a light, crisp beer. But the Maisy Doats, a porter that was brewed with 1,400 chocolate sandwich cookies, is my new favorite- yummy! I would definitely give the Maisy Doats a try if you are reserving an igloo. There are always a variety of beers to suit any taste. If beer is not your favorite, the Blackberry Bramble is worth a try, it’s more tart with blackberries and lemon. Wine and soda is also available.

Winter can seem long and depressing, especially when you live in Northern Indiana during a pandemic. Why not do something unique and different to chase those winter blues away? The food, beer, and atmosphere of the Goshen Brewing Company igloos will not disappoint!
